List and description of specialized dictionaries
The Reverso software product range uses three types of dictionaries:
- A multi-domain dictionary that is integrated into Reverso's translation software programs
- User dictionaries which you can create by yourself by using Reverso Pro
- Specialized dictionaries created by a team of linguists / lexicographers at Softissimo
Reverso multi-domain dictionary

All software products of the Reverso range include a complete multi-domain dictionary which allows you to have high-quality translations.
This dictionary includes terms from numerous sectors (such as finance, economy, data processing
). New words and expressions are added to it on a regular basis.
However, for users whose translations require detailed knowledge for a specific sector, Softissimo offers you the possibility to customize Reverso in two ways:

User dictionaries
With Reverso Pro, you have the possibility to create your own dictionaries. Reverso guides you through the process of setting them up: it manages verb conjugations and constructions (transitive, pronominal, etc.), the plural forms for nouns and adjectives, etc.

Reverso specialized dictionaries

These dictionaries are the result of collaborative efforts between linguists, lexicographers, translators and specialists of the given domain. Reverso specialized dictionaries are created based on the lexicon, expressions, company names, as well as abbreviations, abbreviations or acronyms within the specific domain (computer, medical, etc). A detailed textual analysis is also conducted. Every dictionary is then verified by a linguistic expert of the given domain (professor of medicine, military translator, etc).
In these specialized dictionaries you will find:
- Common everyday words or expressions of the domain that can often be found in the Reverso multi-domain dictionary:
For example: le tibia - > the shinbone ( medical dictionary)
- Specific words or expressions from the domain (specialized vocabulary):
For example: - peripheral joint involvement -> une arthrite périphérique (medical dictionary) ;
- choke linkage -> la tringlerie de starter (automotive dictionary) ;
- visbreaking -> la viscoréduction (petrol/gas dictionary).
- Even for words or expressions which have a general meaning there is a specific meaning in the following domains:
For example: - the English verb" to run " has a general meaning relating to physical exercise ("courir" in French), but it has a different translation in the computer field: "to run an application" can be translated into French as " exécuter une application ";
- the French word "serveur" is translated into English as " waiter " as its general meaning, but in the computer field it is translated as " server ".
Thus, if the computer dictionary is connected, Reverso will only provide the English translation " server ".
These specialized dictionaries are sold separately from the Reverso software programs.

Using the dictionaries

You can connect as many dictionaries as you want to your Reverso's software program.
You can also choose the order of priority for all connected dictionaries. So, when you start your translation, Reverso uses words and expressions from all the connected dictionaries for the translation process. And if a word exists in several dictionaries, Reverso will take the translation from the dictionary having the highest priority.
All that is required is a single mouse click to connect a specialized dictionary to Reverso. The dictionary installation is simple (see the chapter on Dictionaries in the Reverso manual) for both PC and Mac platforms.
The files corresponding to specialized dictionaries have an " .sdc " extension, and the entries of these dictionaries are neither viewable nor printable.
The files corresponding to the user dictionaries that you can create have an " .udc " extension, and the entries can be viewed and modified.
